Sometimes situations can arise that make evangelization a bit challenging. That was the case recently when one of our evangelists, Patti Connors (pictured above), found out her normal evangelization location, St. Leo Soup Kitchen in Detroit, had been flooded. While they work on the extensive clean up, Patti found a unique location to share the truth and love of Jesus -- inside a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store! She got permission from the store owners and now sets up a table on Saturdays at the entrance to talk with shoppers. The first time she evangelized, about 25 people stopped to chat and inquire about SPSE and what we represent. Many were happy to accept rosaries, medals and a few stayed to pray.

One lady in particular, named Donna, told Patti about her mom who was ill and recently diagnosed with cancer:

"I asked her if she would like a Miraculous Medal, which she gladly accepted and gave her the holy card that explains the story behind it. She couldn't believe it was free! She asked if she could have one for herself, as well, and thought her mom would love the idea that they would both be reminded to pray together to our Holy Mother for recovery. We chatted a bit more and she told me that she had not been to church in a while, so I gave her a sheet of Catholic churches in the nearby area. With tears in her eyes, she walked away with a smile and thanked me many times for her generosity. I told her that Jesus had led her to us that day."

Praised be Jesus Christ!

Learning to Evangelize

Lancaster, PA. On Oct. 23rd, a team from SPSE came out to Lancaster (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church) and gave evangelization training to over 45 people including Bishop Gainer, two priests and five deacons. We began the day with Mass and then received fantastic training which included instruction and small group interaction. After the training was completed, 20-25 of us “hit the streets” at the Penn Square area putting into practice what was received in class.

We experienced many divine encounters while sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ including witnessing to and praying with: a marriage party who were leaving the Lancaster Marriott Hotel, numerous “street people”, tourists and restaurant-goers. Most were open (including the newly-weds!) to receiving various sacramentals (Miraculous Medals, rosaries, crucifixes, etc), and dialogue/prayer.

Tim and Two Atheists

San Diego, CA. Our team witnesses Tuesday evenings in front of a Trader Joe’s just off the campus of San Diego State University. While we see so many students, most pass us by. Nevertheless, every outing the Lord gives us ample chances to witness to the young minds all around us at every outing. Tim, a new recruit to our team is very adept at sharing the Faith, had a good encounter with a couple of college-aged women. They walked up, and one immediately asked if I’d answer some questions. I said yes. She was an atheist and had questions about the Faith. I told her it was too easy to be an atheist, denying God’s existence because you can’t see or hear Him. Everything in life that has value comes with effort, like school, work or raising good kids. For about 20 min., I answered how I came to faith in Jesus and how God made us male and female. I told them that God can’t be referred to as “it” since He’s personal, but that we call Him Father and “He” because males generally take the initiative with females, and God takes the initiative in His relationship with us.
