Some people still listen when the Truth is spoken -2021-02-28

March 13, 2021

A dismaying number of people, mostly under the age of 20, display contempt for the saving message of Jesus Christ. So we are needed more than ever. Thank you again so much for your prayers for the Boise Catholic street evangelization effort! Three evangelists were available.

A group of 3 homeless-looking people came by, a heavyset woman in a motorized wheelchair, a frail-looking older woman also in a wheelchair, and a thin older man on foot. They each chose a Rosary. E. Lucy talked with the frail-looking woman, who refused the pamphlet, claiming she didn't have room for it. We encouraged them all to pray the Rosary every day, for peace and for protection. The first wheelchair user then asked for a second Rosary for her husband, who was in jail and needed prayer. Holy Mother, please intercede for them that their lives come into line with Our Lord’s will.

Two or three large groups of teenage boys (5-6 in each group) stopped, most of them wanting a Rosary. Many said they knew Who Jesus is. One teen on the fringe was smirking and whispering to his friend, so e. Chuck spoke directly to him about what Christ has done for us and how important it is to get to know Him better through praying the Rosary. He nodded, continued to smirk, but chose a Rosary anyway. Meanwhile, e. Lucy gave another of the young men a copy of the kerygma and encouraged him to read it when he got a moment. Mother Mary, pray especially  for the doubters and scoffers.

A 20-something woman, accompanied by a perhaps 30-something man, stopped. Not Christian, the woman was very interested in religions. E. Lucy gave her a copy of the kerygma and encouraged her to pray the Rosary, even if all she had was questions about Who Jesus is, and what His actions in the Mysteries mean in her life. She gladly accepted.

A group of high school- or college-aged people stopped . The man with whom e. Chuck spoke said he knew Who Jesus was but, as Chuck spoke with him about how to pray the Rosary and what it was about, he got quiet and stopped responding. When others in his group left the table, he just nodded to the evangelist and joined them. Only You know what's in his heart Lord, give him the ears to hear.

A woman in the same group, in her late teens or early 20s, chose a Rosary and had a pleasant conversation with e. Chuck and e. Todd. In stark contrast to her friendly demeanor, her mask displayed a rude phrase meaning “leave me alone”.

A 40-something woman walked by, accompanied by a man of about the same age. She called to us in a friendly way that she “used to be” Catholic. Please pray for her?

A non-Catholic man walked by. He politely declined a Rosary, but asked a blessing on us. After he was out of earshot, e. Lucy explained to second-time evangelist Todd that we only conditionally accept blessings, especially when we don't know who or what the giver worships. Good to know.

“Mr. Silver Umbrella” walked by without his umbrella (possibly because the sky was so heavily overcast). He declined a Rosary, but he also didn't start singing loudly this time. I consider that progress.  Lord, bring him all the way home to Your Church!

A very thin blond woman, accompanied by a stocky man, accepted a Rosary and brief explanation of the devotion. On her way past, a second time, she greeted us warmly.

  1. Lucy assured a nonbelieving 20-something woman that Jesus is a real historical person and that the Resurrection, the central tenet of our Faith, actually happened. The woman was encouraged to check into the authentic historical record.

A passing man said he had picked up a Rosary from us some time ago. When asked if he had prayed with it, he said no but he kept it on his microwave oven and looked at it every day. When encouraged to give prayer a try, he replied that he figured he had ten, maybe twenty, years of life left, and so had plenty of time to learn to pray. When e. Chuck offered that there was nothing stopping him right now, he just smiled and kept walking. May the sight of the little Crucifix in his kitchen spur him to seek a relationship with the living God!

Altogether, the three evangelists gave away 25-30 Rosaries and its booklet, as well as at least two copies of the kerygma.

Please pray for us again today? Ask God to send people to us prepared to perceive their need for Our Savior Jesus Christ and His Holy Catholic Church, and that much good fruit for His Kingdom comes of today’s efforts.

Though taught to scoff at the thought of Jesus Christ, some people still listen when the Truth is spoken to with earnestness and conviction. So thank you again for your prayers and other support for this apostolate. In turn, may God protect and bless you and all those you love!
