33 Years in Jail
Bill and I returned to Eastern Market on a clear and hot morning. Jehovah's Witnesses were already stationed at our usual spot, so we decided to station under a shade tree about 50 feet away. The morning got off to a slow start with few people passing by and even fewer stopping to talk to us. Thankfully, almost everyone was polite, saying "God bless you" after they declined the offer of a free Rosary. That started to change halfway through the outing with more people willing to stop and talk, but most were brief and hurried.
From a distance, I saw a man quickly hurry around the corner. He wore a t-shirt with an image of a gun pointing towards the viewer with the words "Go ahead and try me!" Bill offered him a Rosary and the man immediately became irate, shouting curse words and accusations at us. It was clear that he was hurt somehow and needed to vent. The encounter lasted only ten seconds and we couldn't say much, so we stopped and prayed for him immediately after he left.
Our best encounter came just about ten minutes before our ending. An elderly woman stopped next to me, seeking shelter under the shade tree. I offered her a Rosary and/or intercessory prayer—she eagerly accepted both! She said that she was waiting for her son to come pick her and he recently got out of prison after 33 years. I pointed out that Our Lord lived 33 years on this earth then I led a prayer for her family, namely for herself and her son. It was clear before, during, and after the prayer that our ministry made a positive impact on her.
