Evangelizing Catholic School Students and Families
Bill and I returned to Eastern Market on a sunny but chilly Saturday morning. Traffic at the market was significantly lower than our last visit three weeks ago. Also, this was the first time in at least a year that Jehovah\\\'s Witnesses weren\\\'t stationed nearby. That being said, there appeared to be a larger percentage of people who were interested and receptive.
An elderly couple curiously looked at me as soon as I arrived at our spot, before Bill arrived and while I was starting to set up. The woman approached and seemed more interested than the man. I started putting out rosaries and told her about the devotion. I explained the Rosary as a meditation on the Gospels as she began to cry tears of joy. Bill arrived and took over the conversation, later praying with the couple and inviting them to a Catholic church a few blocks away.
We spoke to two different families who had a child in Catholic school. In both cases, parents encouraged the child to approach and take a rosary, while adults stood at a distance and watched. I looked at the adults and told them \\\"the rosary is not just for children\\\" and, sometimes, the adult would approach as well. While it\\\'s great to minister to children, I would rather focus my time and attention to evangelize the adults. Hopefully the children\\\'s Catholic education, curiosity, and openness will make positive impacts on the whole family.
I plan to evangelize at the market again on the next two Saturdays. While Eastern Market is open all year, colder weather and the end of the fall harvest always mean fewer shoppers and usually shorter conversations.
