This report comes to us from team leader Geoff with our St. Columba parish team in Durango, Colorado:
A man walked past our table at the flea market, limping along with a cane. I offered him a free rosary or Miraculous Medal. He kept walking, while saying something about the world being messed up. “How about we pray together for a better world,” I offered. He stopped, and I walked to him. “I believe in God,” he said, but I don’t follow Christianity. “What’s your name?” I asked. “Jason”, he said. “I’m Geoff, nice to meet you.” He looked Navajo and I asked him if he’s from the Reservation. “Yes,” he said. “Have you had experience with Christianity on the Reservation?” I asked. “I used to be Mormon,” he said, “but I don’t follow Joseph Smith anymore. I’ve also had experience with the Jehovah’s Witnesses.” The Mormons and JW’s had been busy on the Reservation, and Jason seemed jaded by them. I shared with him the story of my Dad’s journey into death with Heaven’s Gate, and we connected through our common experience with cults. “I’m a lawyer and a skeptic,” I said, “and I won’t believe a religion unless there is rock solid evidence supporting the truth of it. Which is why I’m a Catholic.” That got Jason’s attention and he wanted to hear more. I shared compelling evidence for the truth of Jesus’ resurrection, and how he gave us the Catholic Church to bring us into his family and give us life, joy and peace. We then prayed for healing in Jason’s back so he could work and function better, and for God to bring about a better world. Jason and I parted as friends, and he now has a positive view of the Catholic Church. God is good!
