This story comes to us from team leader Albert with our Somerville–Immaculate Conception parish team in New Jersey:

On Saturday, Will and I set up our table at our usual location. Although it was a hot, sunny day, our spot was comfortable and breezy, which helped create a welcoming environment for conversations. Before we’d even finished setting up, a woman approached us and shared that she was Catholic but had not been attending Mass because she had been caring for her mother. We prayed with her, encouraged her to return to Mass when possible, and invited her to join us in prayer. She remained with us while we finished setting up and participated in our team prayer. Before leaving, she took a rosary for her mother and asked for directions to the local parish.

Throughout the session, we had several meaningful encounters with groups of young men. The first was a kickboxer wearing a crucifix and a shirt with a Christian message. Although he was not Catholic, he was open to conversation. We shared why we are Catholic and, at the suggestion of the woman accompanying him, prayed for his upcoming fight.

Our next encounter challenged some of our assumptions. Two young men with multiple piercings and graphic T-shirts stopped at the table. To our surprise, they were Catholic. We spoke with them about the importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation and shared why confession remains an important part of our faith lives. We prayed together, and both accepted rosaries before continuing on their way.

Later, a young musician stopped to request prayer. He was Christian and his band was playing on Main Street that night. He asked that we pray for him to discern and live according to God’s will. After leaving, he returned with a friend who shared a similar prayer intention. This led to a thoughtful conversation about Catholic teachings on Mary and the sacraments. They expressed appreciation for our non-confrontational approach and contrasted it with some of the discussions they had encountered online. The conversation was respectful, sincere, and encouraging. While we were talking, an employee from a restaurant across the street came over. He explained that he’d been observing us throughout his shift and wanted to learn more about what we were doing. He shared that he’d fallen away from the Church but was interested in returning. Although he was unable to stay and talk because of work commitments, he left his contact information so we could follow up.

The day was marked by several opportunities for prayer, encouragement, and faith-filled conversations. We were reminded once again that many people are carrying spiritual questions and burdens, and that a welcoming presence can open the door to meaningful encounters with Christ.
