We had just finished prison ministry and, as is our practice, we went to breakfast. The restaurant was hopping, and people were standing in line, waiting for a seat. The only open seats were those at the lunch counter, so my team and I grabbed them. As we were sitting there waiting for our food to arrive, the cook, a bald guy covered with tattoos, looked over the food counter directly at me, stopped cooking, and came out of the kitchen. He walked straight up to me, put out his hand and said, “Thank you, you saved my life.”

I’d forgotten all about him, but as soon as we shook hands, I remembered he was someone I’d ministered to several months ago in prison.

Any ministry can become tiresome and can drag you down, but every so often, God gives you a small glimmer to keep you going. That day was my turn to receive the glimmer. He didn’t just say “thank you”, or “I really appreciated your words”, but rather, “you saved my life”. It was a truly humbling experience, and it made my day/week/month/year (and of course, it was Jesus who saved him, not me).

I’m an evangelist with SPSE, but because of the circumstances of prison, we cannot hand out rosaries and holy medals, so we have to think outside of the box. Remember that you can evangelize anywhere, at any time, using anything or nothing at all. I write this to pass along this man’s sentiments to my fellow ministers. Today I was the one who got to hear the praise, but there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of others who could say the same to each of you. Thank you for your work in this ministry. YOU are making a difference and people like this man are the proof!
