Becoming Aware of Blessings/ Surrender to the Lord Jesus

John approached our SPSE table as he was walking into the worship area and wondered if the items were free. "Yes." We chatted briefly about the rosary (he is a cradle Catholic) and he said he would like prayer. He showed me the incision on the front of his neck telling me about how the surgeon went in through the front of his neck to do some repairs on his cervical bones. He mentioned that he had the best surgeon in the area. He also mentioned how he was currently staying with his sister while he recovered since he was single and had no one at home. Other health issues were mentioned. Prayer began with thanksgiving for his sister's generosity in having John stay with her during this post-surgical period. Having the "best surgeon" in the area was also articulated in the prayer. All intentions John shared were lifted to God.

During prayer, I felt the Lord was asking John to surrender more of his heart to the Lord Jesus. John was open to the idea of God revealing exactly HOW to surrender more of his heart during the Awaken service. And this Awaken included a healing service as well. What a wonderful time of sharing and praying.

St. Mary Queen of Creation – two encounters

St. Mary Queen of Creation Awaken event was phenomenal. St. Mary recently started a SPSE team (Kym, a St. Mary, SPSE team member, is pictured here in the middle of SPSE Awaken evangelists Denise, Stewart, (Kym), Margy, and Mark.) Many stopped by the SPSE table. Some availed themselves of a rosary or other literature. Others asked for prayer. Below are two encounters although many occurred before and after the event:

Two elderly couples came rather early. They had never been to Awaken before but one couple had coaxed the other couple to join them. I happened to be walking in when they were as I was getting SPSE supplies from my vehicle and still setting up. One of the men offered to hold the door since I was carrying supplies. As he opened the door, I noticed that he seemed unable to lift is arm in a normal way. I mentioned to him that part what we (SPSE) do at Awaken is pray for people and that his shoulder looked as if it was sore. He seemed shocked and asked “How did you know that my shoulder is bad?” I shared that I’m very aware of things like that. He agreed to have us pray for him. Once I finished setting up, I noticed that the Awaken event was not set to start for another 15 minutes. I went into the church to find the man and ask him about having us pray for him and he was just coming out to find me! I had him sit down and did a brief interview after we chatted and exchanged names. The interview included things the pain level, how long he had the problem, when it first started, and if any major life events occurred around the time it had started. It seems that this should had been an issues for a very long time and was getting worse as the years rolled by. A degenerative breakdown of the shoulder was the diagnosis and he had no pain but could only lift his arm until it was parallel with the floor. I called over a prayer partner from our SPSE team and we prayed. When we finished he had a big smile and he tried to lift his arm again and said “It’s the same but thank you for praying!” We prayed one more time. I sensed that the Lord wanted him to praise Him (the Lord) by lifting his arm during the worship portion of the event. “Jesus sometimes heals when we take an action, ” I said. He was quite joyful when he went back to his seat. It seemed he had not received prayer like this before. His faith was strengthened! And I cannot tell you if God healed his shoulder that night but this man knew he was loved when we were done praying.

I spoke with a woman who also came early for the event. I greeted her asked if she wanted a rosary. “No, I have plenty of them…” We chatted a bit more and then I offered to pray for her. She said “No” and headed into the church to sit down. Awaken always has praise the worship music, Adoration, and a spiritual talk. The speaker on this particular night shared an engaging story. Near the end of the night before Awaken was even over, the woman rushed out of the church and said, “Can you pray for me? You see, I’ve also suffered sexual abuse”. The speaker’s story included this topic (for an audio of the talk go to awakenministry.org and select June 2019) and the woman was so glad to have the opportunity to pray about this matter.

While at our last parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Troy, I spoke with many lovely Catholics. One woman, when I asked her what she wanted us to pray for, shared the challenges of caring for her elderly parent. The woman was distraught and worried about the future. She had many questions for me about senior care facilities and hiring caregivers. I shared some of my experiences in caring for my dear 90-year old mom. We prayed prayers of Thanksgiving for her Mother and her life and asked, in Jesus’ name, for peace and consolation in the present and in the days that lie ahead. She shared how she felt great peace! How simple it is to pray with each other. God wants us to love one another (John 13:34). Want to learn more about street ministry and praying with others? Father Joe Freedy, currently the Vocations Director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will be the presenter for this month’s Awaken. Father played quarterback at the University of Buffalo and enjoyed partying until an experience just before his senior changed his life.

Unleash the Gospel!

Please join us in unleashing the Gospel! We will evangelize following the November 18th, Awaken. Mr. Peter Herbeck will be the speaker for this event. Our SPSE table will be near the cookies and coffee.

Peter Herbeck is the Vice President and Director of Missions for Renewal Ministries. He has been actively involved in evangelization and Catholic renewal throughout the U.S., Canada, Africa, and Eastern Europe for the past thirty years. Peter is a co-host for the weekly television programs The Choices We Face and Crossing the Goal. He also hosts the daily radio show Fire on the Earth. He is a frequent conference speaker, has authored When the Spirit Comes in Power and When the Spirit Speaks, and has produced CDs and booklets about discipleship and life in the Spirit. Peter is involved with i.d.916, an outreach to Catholic young adults sponsored by Renewal Ministries.Peter and his wife Debbie have four children and reside in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
