Mesa, AZ MLK Day Festival

SPSE Team Photo Today the Tempe Team went to the MLK Day festival in Mesa, AZ to share the Good News. We encountered two women who wanted help getting their children Baptized. There were a number of people who were happy to see us and thought our presence at the festival was a sign that they need to come back to the church. One fallen away Catholic woman wanted to know all about the history of the Church and then wanted to be shown how to pray the Rosary. We prayed the Joyful mysteries with her and her 11 year old son. To top off the day we video called Patricia from the Lagos Nigeria team so she could see how street evangelization looks in the U.S. and she ended up speaking with the president of the festival about Our Lord and Saviour! Good Friday St. Evangelization in Phoenix

On Good Friday evangelists from the Mesa, Phoenix and Tempe Arizona teams went out to offer comfort to a hurting world by witnessing to the Good News about Jesus Christ. Social distancing in response to the pandemic prompted the evangelists to select a new location where there is never much foot traffic but there is much vehicle traffic.

Three evangelists held signs and Crucifixes while another evangelist prayed the Rosary. People driving by honked their horns and gave the thumbs up in support of the message (a few even made the sign of the cross while driving by!). A security guard from a nearby business, bored with little to do because of the pandemic, stopped by to chat.

All in all it was a great morning working towards building God’s Kingdom!

Disciples Formed in Holiness

Fr. Eduardo Montemayor, SOLT at Most Holy Trinity in Phoenix, Arizona recently held a retreat called Disciple Formed in Holiness. One weekend was for Spanish speakers and another weekend was for English speakers. One part of the retreat involved trying a ministry out of the comfort zone of the participants. I offered Street Evangelization as one option.

Each weekend a number of participants chose street evangelization. After reviewing the basics of the St. Paul Street Evangelization method, participants hit the streets of North Phoenix for 2.5 hours to share the Good News of Jesus Christ and the Church he founded. All had wonderful encounters. Discussions, prayers, Kerygma proclamations and invitations to faith began as soon as the evangelists arrived at the local light rail station. I was kept busy guiding the new evangelists and keeping everyone supplied with rosaries and tracts.

There was one very interesting encounter I had with a follower of the controversial Faithful Word Baptist Church based in Tempe. Although their teachings are very anti-Catholic, I encountered a woman who felt drawn to Catholicism even though she had been taught only bad things about the Church. After answering a few questions, I prayed for this woman and gave her his contact information in case she has additional questions. All participants said that they would do this again and two expressed interest in starting a team!!

On Saturday, October 8th, we shared the Good News of Jesus Christ at the annual Tempe Tardeada in Tempe. We had great discussions with many wonderful people. The city of Tempe estimated 12,000 people were in attendance and we were front and center next to the main stage. God is good!
