In this photo we see Steve, our national director, at a recent conference speaking to a protestant fellow, Charles, about the problem of Christian disunity and denominationalism. There are many, many, Christian denominations, and a great many of them teach different things about the core truths of Christianity – and they cannot all be correct. Furthermore, Our Blessed Lord prayed that all his disciples would be one, as He and the Father are one – and in St. Paul’s letters he exhorted Christians to be of one mind and heart, saying that there is only one Faith, just as there is one God, one Lord, one Spirit, and one baptism.
In the second century, St. Irenaeus, the bishop of Lyon, wrote that the Church believes the points of the creed “just as if she had but one soul, and one and the same heart, and she proclaims them, and teaches them, and hands them down, with perfect harmony, as if she possessed only one mouth. For, although the languages of the world are dissimilar, yet the import of the tradition is one and the same… The Catholic Church possesses one and the same faith throughout the whole world.”
Today, too, by the gift of God promised to her, the same Catholic Church teaches the same faith. The sad divisions of Christians must end, so that the one Church will be more clearly manifest to the world as the true household of God. Please pray for this to come about soon!
