This report is the second in a two-part story from evangelist Mark with the National SPSE team:

Bob and I went to downtown Detroit to evangelize at the annual St. Aloysius Block Party. I was there for two hours but my most memorable conversation was with a young woman, Alexis, probably in her twenties. She has belonged to several churches throughout her life but currently goes to a newer, trendy, non-denominational church a block away. I talked about how Christ established a church led by the apostles, who in turn appointed bishops, priests, and deacons. That clergy led the Church for decades before any of the New Testament was written down. When you study the epistles, it closely describes the Catholic Church, while the majority of Protestant churches don’t fit those descriptions at all. Countless denominations claim that they all follow the Bible alone yet they still have many disagreements. We need an authoritative Magisterium to lead us and guide us in what is true and good.

Alexis asked me, “what is the role of the pope?” I talked about Matthew 16 and Jesus proclaiming Simon Peter to be The Rock and foundation of the Church. First, God changed Simon’s name to Peter. When God changes someone’s name there’s a significant mission and reason behind that change. A local church needs a pastor and leader. Just so, the broader, worldwide church needs a visible leader. Peter was appointed to be the earthly head of the Church. Of course he died, so someone had to take his place. There’s an unbroken chain of apostolic succession throughout the history of the Church.

I offered to pray for Alexis and she accepted. I prayed out loud for her wisdom, discernment where God is calling her, that she would grow in grace and virtue, and for her ultimate salvation. Alexis thanked me for the prayer and took a Rosary, Miraculous Medal, as well as pamphlets on Why Be Catholic, The Eucharist, and more. I pointed out that the church doors were wide open and the parish priest was nearby. I encouraged her to go inside the church and talk to the priest. Alexis accepted both offers: talked to the priest, went inside the church, then came back half an hour later to thank me. I promised to keep her in my prayers. She smiled and thanked me again before walking away.

Praised be Jesus Christ!
