The following story comes to us from team leader Deb with our team in Owatonna, MN:
Following a night of wild weather, including tornado warnings, the morning broke clear and
cool—perfect conditions for a joyful day of evangelization on the University of St. Thomas campus. Archbishop Bernard Hebda joined an enthusiastic team of seminarians, Campus Ministry members, St. Paul’s Outreach, and Street Evangelization missionaries for a moving encounter with students.
As classes changed, foot traffic increased, and a steady stream of students approached, drawn by the warm presence of the Archbishop and the invitation to receive prayer, a blessing, or a sacramental such as a rosary or blessed medal. Over the course of just a few hours, more than a hundred young people stopped by, many touched by the opportunity to meet the Archbishop and share their concerns or hopes.
What stood out most was the depth of the students’ openness. Some shared personal or family
struggles—requests for healing, strength in faith, peace during exams, or recovery from surgeries and illnesses. One student prayed for a grandmother overseas; another, for a sister exploring Catholicism. A few shared past encounters with Archbishop Hebda, joyful to reconnect and update him on their lives.
Each encounter was heartfelt and unique. From those grieving lost faith or facing medical hardships to others celebrating milestones like birthdays or upcoming weddings, the Archbishop gave each student his full attention and prayerful presence. His genuine care and joyful demeanor left a profound impression on all who met him.
The outing beautifully embodied the Church’s mission to meet people where they are. In this case, it was a college quad that became a space of grace, connection, and evangelization. The day ended with hearts lifted—students reminded they are seen, known, and loved, and the evangelization team encouraged by the fruits of simple presence and prayer.
Praised be Jesus Christ!
