This report comes from team leader Mark with the Eastern Market SPSE team in Detroit, MI:
Eric, Mark and Susan returned to Eastern Market on a sunny but windy Saturday morning
A young girl, about six or seven years old, directly approached our table along with her father. She was completely unchurched—definitely hesitant and apprehensive—repeatedly saying “I don’t really do church.” I told her that anybody could pray, even though she has never done it before. Her father looked at her silently, passively, and permissively— seemingly one of those who say “let the child decide religion for herself.” We tried to console and encourage her, but her fear and apprehension kept her away. Pray for this young girl and for her father, that both will come to realize the importance of faith and the Church.
Eric works as a pharmacist and was able to sympathize with two different people coping with major health problems, including cancer and chronic back pain. Eric talked to one woman with back problems and he was able to sympathize because his wife has the same condition. Later, he talked to another man and Eric knew about all of the medications he was taking, including their side effects. In both of these cases, Eric was able to find common ground and was able to pray with them and console them in their suffering.
Multiple groups quickly walked past us, then turned around and approached our table. A couple of teenagers, walking quickly and carrying large boxes, initially ignored us but quickly turned around to accept Rosaries before they hurried off again. Many people politely declined our offer of a free Rosary, saying that they already had one at home. We encouraged them to pray it often, offering bookmarks with the fifteen promises of the Daily Rosary.
Praised be Jesus Christ!
